Nearly 100 hospitals have already signed up for the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)s new Sterile Processing Benchmarks tool in the first few weeks since it was launched.

The web-based tool, developed by leading sterilization and software experts, allows sterile processing departments to measure their policies and procedures against similar departments at other facilities.

Subscribers complete a survey that includes about 130 benchmarking measures and metrics on topics that vary from staffing and budgeting, to productivity levels and error rates.

"Were pleased that subscribers have already begun entering their benchmarking data into the system," says Patrick Bernat, AAMIs director of healthcare technology management. "Sterile processing professionals have made it clear that a standardized benchmarking tool has been sorely needed in the field. And the initial subscribers have reported that the tools ease of use makes it very attractive in terms of filling that need."
