The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) today announced that Tara Millson, MSN, RN, CIC, a doctoral candidate in nursing practice in infection prevention from Loyola University Chicago, is the 2018 recipient of the APIC Graduate Student Award (AGSA) which carries a $5,000 stipend.

Millson received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Management from Western Governors University. She is an infection preventionist at Mohawk Valley Health System in Utica, N.Y. and has been an active APIC member since 2014.

Millson is the third winner of the award. Her doctoral thesis is titled, “Implementation of the AHRQ ESRD Safety Program in an Outpatient Hemodialysis Center.” It examines the effect of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program (CUSP) model on the culture of safety and staff adherence.

“We are pleased to be able to support Ms. Millson’s research with this award,” said 2018 APIC president Janet Haas, PhD, RN, CIC, FSHEA, FAPIC. “Her work will advance our understanding of infection prevention in non-acute care settings, an important area both for patient safety and our profession’s growth.”

Millson’s award will be formally presented June 15 at APIC’s Annual Conference in Minneapolis. She will be presenting a session on infection prevention in dialysis, also on June 15 at the conference.

The APIC Graduate Student Award (AGSA) supports research that advances infection prevention and evidence-based implementation science. The award is given to a student seeking to complete a master's or doctoral degree. Application evaluations are based on demonstrating the value of implementation science and the implications for infection prevention and quality efforts across clinical settings.
