Call-In Discussion to Address Challenges of HAIs

Article

Every year, more than 1.7 million Americans are diagnosed with healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Around 99,000 people die from their infection and the cost to U.S. hospitals alone is estimated at $28.4 to $45 billion annually. These numbers are only going to grow as the rate of infection rises and more and more develop resistance to antibiotics.

On July 22, 2013, join the Alliance for Aging Research, in partnership with the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) as they are joined by experts discussing this urgent problem. The centerpiece of this discussion will be the latest fact sheet from the Alliance's Silver Book, which shines the spotlight on the human and economic burden of healthcare-associated infections, and explores the value of innovation in reducing these burdens.

Speakers include:

- Daniel Perry, president of the Alliance for Aging Research

- Sue Peschin, CEO of the Alliance for Aging Research

Thomas M. File, Jr. MD, president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases

- Victoria Fraser, MD, professor of medicine and chair of the Department of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, and a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America

- R. Douglas Scott, II, PhD, an economist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

- Robyn Grant, director of public policy and advocacy for National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care
