At the 160th Midwinter Meeting held from February 19 to 22, 2025, the Chicago Dental Society (CDS) recognized 2 distinguished professionals for their outstanding contributions to dentistry. Joseph Hagenbruch, DMD, received the Chicago Dental Society Foundation Vision Award, while Mark Lingen, DDS, PhD, was honored with the Gordon J. Christensen Lecturer Recognition Award.
These awards celebrate their dedication to scientific advancements, community service, and leadership in the dental profession. CDS President Dr. Denise Hale praised both recipients for their commitment to serving underserved communities and advancing dental education, emphasizing their profound influence on peers, patients, and the future of oral health care.
Joseph Hagenbruch, DMD: A Lifetime of Service in Dentistry The CDS Foundation Vision Award is given to individuals who exemplify integrity, public trust, and a strong commitment to volunteerism and dental education in underserved communities. Hagenbruch embodies these values through his long-standing efforts to improve dental access for those in need.
As the Dental Director at the Family Health Partnership Clinic (FHPC) in Crystal Lake, IL, Hagenbruch oversees a team of volunteer professionals providing essential care to uninsured and underinsured individuals. His leadership ensures that those who might not otherwise receive dental treatment have access to necessary services. A graduate of Washington University School of Dental Medicine, Hagenbruch has served the profession for over 37 years, holding numerous leadership roles, including President of the Illinois State Dental Society, the Illinois Academy of General Dentistry, and the McHenry County Dental Society.
He also served as an Eighth District Trustee for the American Dental Association (ADA) from 2010 to 2014 and contributed to key ADA committees focused on dental benefits and procedural codes. Dr. Hagenbruch is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the American College of Dentistry.
His extensive work includes serving as a Commissioner for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and acting as a Dental Examiner for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments since 2004. Beyond his professional contributions, Dr. Hagenbruch is deeply engaged in his community, actively participating in organizations such as the Harvard Chamber of Commerce, the Harvard Lions Club, and the Harvard American Legion Post 265. His dedication to dentistry and public service inspires the next generation of dental professionals.
Mark Lingen, DDS, PhD: Advancing Oral Cancer Research and Education The Gordon J. Christensen Lecturer Recognition Award honors individuals who have made remarkable contributions to dentistry and the Midwinter Meeting. Lingen, a Professor of Pathology and Medicine at The University of Chicago, is a leading oral cancer research and pathology expert. Lingen completed his dental training, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology residency, and PhD in Cellular and Molecular Pathology at Northwestern University.
Throughout his career, he has been pivotal in advancing oral cancer screening techniques, improving diagnostic tools, and shaping clinical guidelines. His ADA Council of Scientific Affairs (CSA) leadership has contributed to evidence-based recommendations for evaluating potentially malignant oral disorders. As a member and Chair of CSA Expert Panels, Dr. Lingen has influenced best practices for early oral cancer detection and management, equipping dentists with the knowledge and tools to identify and treat high-risk cases more effectively. An esteemed researcher and educator, Lingen has received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and has published numerous studies on oral and maxillofacial diseases. He is a sought-after speaker and expert, sharing his insights at global dental conferences and institutions.
Lingen holds Diplomate status with the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Royal College of Pathologists. His passion for mentoring the next generation of dental professionals continues to shape the future of oral health care.
