MOBILE, Al-Nearly three weeks ago, an African graduate student at Spring Hill College died of tuberculosis. Today, some 48 people at the school have tested positive for the airborne infectious disease.
One third of the 1,500-student population is being tested for TB as health investigators determine how Benedict Lenjo, 28, could have contracted the disease. Lenjo, originally from Kenya, was suffering from chronic fatigue and a severe cough. He had lost weight and was not receiving medical treatment.
Those who have tested positive have been given X-rays and antibiotics. TB, while rare in the US, is a common problem in Kenya and many other foreign countries.
