Research Validates Effectiveness of STERIS UV System as Back-Up to Manual Disinfection

Article

In response to a healthcare industry need to address the infection control gaps that many times linger following manual disinfection processes, STERIS Corporation, a leading provider of infection prevention solutions, introduces the PATHOGON UV Disinfection System.

The PATHOGON system was developed to optimize the manual surface disinfection
process by minimizing the risk of cross-contamination caused by missed surfaces or insufficient contact times for liquid chemical disinfectants, and has been proven effective against a wide range of organisms. It uses a narrow band of ultraviolet light to reduce or kill lingering pathogens on environmental surfaces, including pathogens associated with healthcare-acquired infections, as a final step in decontaminating patient rooms, ORs, pre- and post-op rooms, and the emergency department.

Weve applied our 75-plus years of experience in healthcare infection control to make
dramatic improvements in how hospitals can confidently and effectively decontaminate rooms, particularly in a time when we frequently see downsized staffs and a heightened need for quick turnaround of rooms, says Ted Mielnik, vice president of global VHP application development at  STERIS. The PATHOGON system is not a replacement for manual surface disinfection, but rather an efficient final step to kill germs on surfaces that may be missed during this manual process.

An independent lab evaluated the PATHOGON system under GLP standardized testing
conditions to show the systems effectiveness against a range of pathogens including
Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobactor baumannii, vancomycin
resistant Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, MRSA, influenza A, human norovirus (Feline calicivirus surrogate tested) and Clostridium difficile spore.
